Fighting against diffraction: apodization and near field diffraction structures

چکیده
Diffraction is a natural phenomenon, which occurs when waves propagate or encounter an obstacle. Diffraction is also a fundamental aspect of modern optics: all imaging systems are diffraction systems. However, like a coin has two sides, diffraction also leads to some unfavorable effects, such as an increase in the size of a beam during propagation, and a limited minimal beam size after focusing. To overcome these disadvantages set by diffraction, many techniques have been developed by various groups, including apodization techniques to reduce the divergence of a laser beam and increase the resolution, and time reversal, STED microscopy, super lenses and optical antennas to obtain resolution down to nano-scale. This review concentrates on the diffraction of electromagnetic waves, and the ways to overcome beam divergence and the

Pupil phase apodization for imaging of faint companions in prescribed regions
We consider the ‘faint companion’ problem where substantial reduction of diffraction sidelobes is required in order to image a faint neighbour near a much brighter source. In addition to well-known pupil amplitude and shape apodization methods, we found that the required sidelobe reduction can be obtained by appropriate spatial phase modulations over an aperture. Here, our previous results on o...
متن کاملMapping of near field light and fabrication of complex nanopatterns by diffraction lithography.
We report a single-step lithographic approach for precisely mapping near field light diffraction in photoresist and fabricating complex subwavelength structures. This method relies on the diffraction of UV light from opaque patterns on a photomask, and utilizes the central diffraction maximum (known as the 'Poisson spot' for an opaque disk) and its higher orders. By correlating pattern geometri...
متن کاملProximity correction and resolution enhancement of plasmonic lens lithography far beyond the near field diffraction limit
Near-field optical imaging methods have been suffering from the issue of a near field diffraction limit, i.e. imaging resolution and fidelity depend strongly on the distance away from objects, which occurs due to the great decay effect of evanescent waves. Recently, plasmonic cavity lens with off-axis light illumination was proposed as a method for going beyond the near field diffraction limit ...
متن کاملComparison of different theories for focusing through a plane interface: comment.
In light focusing through a dielectric interface, Wiersma et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A14, 1482 (1997)JOAOD60740-323210.1364/JOSAA.14.001482] claim that the Debye-Wolf diffraction theory and the m-theory predict axial focal fields with "little difference." We found a possible mistake of using an inaccurate apodization factor in the m-theory integral. Here we correct the apodization factor, which t...
متن کاملPoint Spread Function of Optical Systems Apodized by Semicircular Array of 2D Aperture Functions with Asymmetric Apodization
The simultaneous suppression of sidelobes and the sharpening of the central peak in the process of diffraction pattern detection based on asymmetric apodization have been investigated. Asymmetric apodization is applied to a semicircular array of two-dimensional (2D) aperture functions, which is a series of ‘coded-phase arrays of semicircular rings randomly distributed over the central circular ...
